Scholarship: J William Petty Scholarship

Information: The J. William Petty Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2009 by: J. Patrick Horner of McLean, Virginia; Michael C. McSweeney of Trussville, Alabama; Christopher K. Zane of Waco, Texas; and friends of J. William Petty in perpetual honor of J. William Petty, Ph.D., professor of finance and the W.W. Caruth Chair of Entrepreneurship.

This scholarship honors Dr. Petty for his unrelenting contribution and dedication to leading, mentoring, and educating students as they grow in the academic and professional realms of finance and entrepreneurship. A common thread in every endeavor undertaken by Dr. Petty is his inexorable pursuit to go above and beyond what most educators think is necessary. He embodies the characteristics of an ideal educator: he cares greatly for his students and does everything he can to help them succeed.

Dr. J. William Petty received a B.S. degree from Abilene Christian University in 1964 and M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas at Austin in 1969 and 1971, respectively. Currently a professor and member of the faculty at Baylor University, he has been designated a University Master Teach, the highest honor Baylor bestows on its faculty members. Not only has he received numerous teaching awards, but Dr. Petty has also been recognized as an outstanding researcher.

Dr. Petty’s leadership, vision, and willingness to take on challenges were integral in beginning the Baylor Venture Associates program, which allows students to explore private equity finance and entrepreneurial finance.

Comments: Recipient must have completed the introduction to finance class with a grade of B or higher and be pursuing either a BBA or BBA/MAcc or MTX joint degree. Students should reflect the character, integrity and leadership qualities demonstrated in the life of J. William Petty.

Criteria:  For students in the School of Business who are a junior or senior.

Minimum GPA: 3.00

Need/Merit: Based on merit.
