Scholarship: Lydia Duncan Hutchison Schp

Information: The Lydia Duncan Hutchison Endowed Scholarship Fund in Education was established in 2011 by Claudia L. Marsh of Evening Shade, Arkansas in memory and at the request of her mother, Lydia.

Lydian Hutchison, daughter of James Clark and Leonora Bridgman Duncan, was born in Desha, Arkansas on April 21, 1916. She aspired to become a concert violinist but was denied acceptance at Arkansas College in Batesville. She began working at the courthouse in Batesville when she met her future husband, Jasper Harold Hutchison, Senior. After they married, they moved to Dallas, Texas where their daughter, Claudia, was born. They joined First Baptist Church where Dr. W. R. Criswell was their pastor. They felt led to move their family to Waco after learning about Baylor University. They later had a son, Jasper Harold Hutchison, Junior. Once her children were in school full-time, Lydia borrowed money from her life insurance policy to attend Baylor. She graduated with a B.A. degree in 1958 and began a teaching career in the Waco I.S.D. that lasted 20 years. Lydia later attended graduate school and received an M.S.Ed. degree in counseling in 1966. One of the Hutchison’s’ dreams was fulfilled when their daughter, Claudia, earned a B.A. degree in 1968 from Baylor University. She went on to become an elementary teach and all-level librarian. Ms. Marsh is a lifetime member of the Baylor Alumni Association.

Lydian Duncan Hutchison passed away on June 7, 2011 in a Batesville hospital. She was survived by her daughter, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. At the memorial service Claudia Shared “[My mother] was always the wind beneath my wings. There are many attributes that mother had: good character, honesty, integrity, practical wisdom, self-discipline, hard worker, positive thinker, unselfish, loving, caring and understanding.”
