Scholarship: Frances Withers Scholarship

Information: The Frances Jane Carl Withers Endowed Scholarship in Education was established in 2014 by George H. Withers, Ph.D., of Austin, Texas, and Baylor University at Waco, Texas.

Frances Jane Carl Withers was born April 2, 1916, in Waco to Pearl Gillis Carl and John Sherman Carl. She graduated from Waco High School in 1933 where she was on the honor roll for three years. She attended the University of Texas but she finished her B.A. degree at Baylor University in 1937, majoring in English and minoring in Spanish. She and her husband, Henry W. Withers, M.D., had five sons. In honor of her husband, Frances helped to establish the Henry W. Withers, M.D. Memorial Excellence Award in Family Practice at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. She was a charter member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston. Frances was also a high school English teacher, and her love of classical literature helped her students understand human nature as they prepared for the challenges of adulthood.

Comments: Preference to students pursuing a career as high school English teachers who have an affinity for classical American and English literature

Criteria:  For Undergraduate students in the School of Education.

Minimum GPA: The University requires a minimum GPA of 2.50; however, individual departments may have more stringent academic requirements.

Need/Merit: Based on merit.
