Scholarship: William & Bettye Nelson Schp

Information: The William O. and Bettye D. Nelson Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2018.

This endowment honors the memory of William O. Nelson and Bettye D. Nelson, both had careers as school teachers and had strong beliefs in the power of education. Born in the depression era of the 21st Century both "Bill" and Bettye had challenging early years. Bettye was first in her family to go to college, attending and graduating from Mary Hardin-Baylor by the time she was 19. During that era, Bill served in the Navy and destiny brought them together in Kingsville, Texas. Bill and Bettye relocated to Waco, Texas so Bill could attend Baylor University. Bill earned a B.A. in biology ('60) and M.S.Ed. ('62) from Baylor University.

Job opportunities took Bill and Bettye to Temple, Texas and then to Austin, Texas and along the way came three sons. Education and degrees from Baylor University provided for a good lifestyle for Bill and Bettye. Their lives were fulfilled by their careers, travel, and continued military reserve service for Bill.

Bettye passed at age of 85 from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Bill established an endowed scholarship fund in Bettye's name at Mary Hardin-Baylor. When Bill passed at age 84 due to complications from stroke, it was clear what Bill would have wanted - a scholarship at Baylor University to give others the opportunity to experience the value of higher education.
